Where Do Scorpions Go In The Winter In Phoenix?
During the winter months in Phoenix, we get cooler nights. While it never gets cold enough for scorpions to die off, chilly temperatures can slow them down. Today, we’ll look at how scorpions respond to temperature changes, where they go in the winter, and what you can do to guard your home from infestations. If you need immediate assistance with a scorpion problem, contact us. Your Greenway Pest Solutions team knows all about these pests.
Why do scorpions seem to vanish in winter?
Scorpions are cold-blooded. This doesn’t mean they like the cold. It means they do not have warm blood in their bodies and do not maintain a warm body temperature. If it is cold out, they get cold. If it is hot out, they get hot. If it is too hot or too cold, they die.
Another fact about scorpions is that they are active at night. During hot summer days, they stay hidden in areas that provide moisture and shade. At night, they come out when it isn’t as hot. In winter, nighttime temperatures drop low enough to cause scorpions to pause all activity, so they seem to “disappear” in winter. It gets too cold for them to go searching for food at night.
Where do scorpions hide in winter?
Arizona bark scorpions find many places to hide. Outdoors, they hide under rocks, concrete slabs, tree bark, and more. When they find their way indoors, they hide mostly in walls and attic spaces.
Scorpion behavior patterns in winter
While solitary by nature, scorpions will gather together into nests during the winter. As many as 30 scorpions can group together to keep warm and wait for outdoor conditions to become favorable again. When temperatures go above 70 degrees, they come out of hiding.
What scorpions do while nesting
It is important to note that scorpions often have litters while nesting and that one litter can have up to 100 babies. Females give birth to live offspring; they don’t lay eggs. When the temperature outdoors warms up, 30 scorpions can emerge as thousands.
Scorpions appearing indoors during the winter
If you’re seeing scorpions in your home between November and February, you will likely have a scorpion nest indoors or close to your exterior. When scorpions sense warm indoor temperatures, they may come out of hiding to search for food. Attics are a common place to find winter scorpions. It tends to stay warmer up there. But scorpions move out quickly when the temperature outdoors warms up. Attics can get too hot for them.
How to prevent a scorpion problem
The best way to deter scorpions is to block their ability to enter your home. Begin with a detailed inspection of your exterior. Consider the tiniest gaps and cracks. Here are some places to focus on:
- Seal gaps around utility lines and pipes.
- Apply caulking material around window and door frames.
- Use expanding foam to fill in larger holes, joists, or cavities.
- Fill in gaps above the foundation slab.
- Patch damaged screens.
- Apply screen material to block access to vents.
- Install weephole protectors if needed.
Once you’re done with the exterior, consider sealing interior gaps. Doing so can deter scorpions from coming out of your wall voids.
- Seal gaps in baseboards.
- Fill in holes and gaps around door and window frames.
- Seal gaps around ceiling ventilation.
- Seal gaps around pipes that enter underneath sinks.
- Fill in floor holes or gaps.
You may use these tips if you don’t have scorpions in your home.
