Winged termites in your yard or inside your house
Winged termites, also known as termite swarmers and alates, are the adult reproductive members of a termite colony. During certain times of the year, winged termites collectively leave their existing termite colony in what is called a nuptial flight to find mates and establish new colonies. This mass exodus is called a swarm, hence termite swarmers.
Termite swarms can occur outside, but also inside structure. If you see a termite swarm happening outside, it does not necessarily mean you have an active termite problem. It does mean a termite colony is nearby, and further action is needed. On the other hand, if you see termite swarmers emerging from cracks and crevices in walls or the foundation, it means these wood-destroying insects have already infested your home or business.
We should point out that you may not see a termite swarm in progress, but you may find evidence of one. After termites have paired off, they will lose their wings. Oftentimes, discarded termite wings are found on or under windowsills and around doors.
Conducive conditions for termites
Subterranean termites need moisture, food, and shelter to survive. If your property provides the conditions they require, there’s a good chance these wood-damaging pests will show up. Conducive conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Wood-to-soil contact
- Interior and exterior moisture issues
- Cracks in slab or foundation
- Firewood, lumber, and mulch stored against the foundation
- Shrubs and other vegetation planted too close to the structure
- Landscape grades that slope toward the structure
